Rio Paraiba near Joao Pessoa – July 29, 2006
We are still anchored in the river near Jaoa Pessoa, which (I forgot to tell you) is the easternmost city of the Americas, both North and South. Late this morning, Grant, Phil and Will went to town and returned about 5PM—blessed quiet here on Indigo! Actually they went to several towns, just looking around and checking out the babes on the beach. More bikinis and thongs, but more cute girls too. They had lunch on the beach and fended off the vendors but fell prey to one who administered tattoos to all of them. Fear not, parents, they are not permanent tattoos. We will put a photo of Phil’s tattoo on the website. His is on his back near his right shoulder and looks like one of those yin-yang things. Grant’s is on his right upper arm and looks like a chain link fence going around his arm. Will’s is on his inner upper arm and is a happy face but somehow his got smeared and will probably be the first one to disappear. Since they are males, they thought this was just great!
Today is Saturday so our wonderful chef cooked as a traditional Brazilian Saturday dinner called feijoada. We all—the crew and us—ate together on the stern deck and what a great time we had! This dinner is composed of different kinds of fresh, smoked and salted meat served with rice and black beans and best of all (that’s a joke) something called farofa. This is some type of manioc flour that resembles finely minced bread crumbs and tasted sort of like that too. Brazilians seem to love it and put it on all types of stuff and even eat it by itself but we Americans decided we would leave it in Brazil.
Yes, we did hear Bolero again and the crowd gathered on the deck again and we all celebrated the sunset again. Phil and Will went out that night to check out the action near Joao Pessoa—I can’t remember now why Grant didn’t go but he stayed home and watched movies. We are all having a great time.
