Going to Itamaraca – July 30, 2006
We left the river this morning and headed out. On the way, we went fishing (trolling) but no luck at all. It was one of those lazy days of just going along in the ocean—the coast is beautiful—and around sunset, we go to where we wanted to be. The only problem was that there was a huge sandbank protecting the entry to the area where we wanted to anchor. Without much effort at all, we went aground but Captain Toby got us out with help from a local fast boat that showed us the way to get in. Yes, we had a chart and yes, we knew the sandbank was there and yes, we were trying to avoid it but it turns out that the sandbank shifts on a regular basis because of the action of the ocean. The crew felt really bad that we even got into the situation, but all’s well that ends well and there we were anchored off Itamaraca between the coastline and an island. What a beautiful place!
So we had dinner on the aft deck and the boys watched some movie and we looked forward to waking up in the morning to see exactly where we were. We didn’t know at that point that we were in one of the most beautiful places on earth with some of the most wonderful people and that we were to start a wonderful adventure.
