Punta Arenas: Saturday – Feb 17, 2007
Today we traveled through Canal Magdalena and crossed the Straits of Magellan and headed up to Punta Arenas. As we crossed the Straits of Magellan, there was a west wind of about 35 knots gusting to 45 knots and that west wind is what makes the Straits so treacherous. But it was only for about two hours or so and we all made it through just fine. Not at all dangerous.
We arrived in Punta Arenas (Sandy Point) about 4PM. There is not much in the way of protected waters here, even at the dock. When a cruise ship left about 9PM, we moved from our anchorage to the dock and it was better but not great. Captain Toby, Chef Geraldine, Stew Tanya, Phil and I had dinner about 10PM at Restaurante Sotito’s, within walking distance of the dock and I had a chance to see this this is a big and maybe not too interesting town. We’ll have to see what Phil reports about it since unfortunately, I have to return to Jacksonville tomorrow. But I have had a wonderful time.
