Canal Magdalena: Friday – Feb 16, 2007

It was windy all night and now there is rain.  We are leaving Isla Brecknock and entering the Canal Cockburn and as we turned the corner in Canal Cockburn, there were some heavy seas and we just had to slog through them.  Luckily, they didn’t last long.  At the east end of Canal Cockburn where it meets Canal Magdalena, we entered the Seno Chico and at the end of this was a huge glacier area.  An older one was straight ahead of us and a younger and more active one was to the left.  These glaciers are ice blue and just beautiful.  You can’t believe they are real and not just some postcard.  They have all been calving and that is so cool!  There were lots of icebergs in the water and with good reason, one of the tour books described this as one of the most beautiful glaciers in Tierra del Fuego.  Just before reaching the glacier, there was a huge–biggest one yet–waterfall on the left side.  And the entrance to the glacier area looked like it was being guarded by two huge rocks on either side with lots of rocks peeking out of the water with cormorants perched on them.  This definitely feels like no one else has ever been here and that we are real explorers.

We stopped for the night a little way down and had a glacier cocktail party with the crew in Canal Magdalena.  We used iceberg ice in our drinks and had a wonderful time.  What an adventure we have had!
