Indigo in Buenos Aires: National Museum of Belles Art and show at La Faena Hotel – Dec 30, 2006

Today I went to the Buenos Aires Design Center and the outdoor market that filled the parks around the Center.  The Design Center is small by our standards but this is the place to go if you need anything for the kitchen, bath or bedroom.  They had furniture for other parts of the house as well but it seemed to focus on the three rooms I listed.  I actually recognized some of the same brands and items that we have everywhere in the states but there were some unfamiliar items as well.  As always, it was fun to look.  The outdoor market is so much different from the Design Center.  The booths there had almost all hand-crafted items of all sorts, including jewelry, clothing, belts, pipes, shoes, junky things, local wood carvings and anything else you can think of that someone can make.  I was surprised there wasn’t more food in the area but maybe they have rules about that.

Phil later met me at the National Museum of Belles Art (Fine Art), also known as the MNBA, which is a short walk from where I was at the outdoor market.  So many people had told us we just had to visit this museum, and it is really pretty good.  They don’t have a really big collection but they have sculptures by Rodin and Moore and paintings by Manet, Monet, Gauguin, van Gogh and others.  It is worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood.

That night, Phil and I–believe it or not–had dinner at La Faena (the hotel I mentioned earlier) and went to something like a cabaret show called “Argentina Imaginings”.  Phil actually enjoyed it but I think that was because of the scantily dressed perfect body young women who actually danced with him and some others in the audience after the show.  It wasn’t actually a tango show but it turns out that Phil went to one of those at the same hotel after Grant and I left so he can tell you about that later.  After the show, we sat in the bar and talked to two delightful young people.  We got home about 1AM and Grant was already home.
