Indigo at sea and Kitty, Grant and Will in Salvador – Aug 10, 2006

We all slept late at the hotel this morning and we woke up to the news that there had been an Islam terrorist threat to blow up ten or more planes, which thankfully was thwarted. When will be willing to say these terrorists are doing these things because of their religion? I briefly considered flying home right away but my wonderful travel agent Cindy Basamot convinced me that things would really be crazy for a few days and it was best to keep to our original plans to fly out Sunday.  So about 2PM, the boys and I went to Boi Preto, reportedly the best churrascaria for churrasco (loosely translated as “barbecue”) in Salvador. It’s one of those Brazilian places that serves all the meat I discussed earlier. They had a huge sushi bar with types of sushi none of us had ever heard of before and everything we ate was sooooo good. I still can’t believe the boys ate dessert after all that! That night, the boys ordered pizza from Pizza Hut which delivered to the hotel. And it was pretty good!

I should tell you that Salvador is the third largest city in Brazil and the most African-influenced. It was in Salvador that the blacks preserved the roots of their African culture more than anywhere else in the New World. There is an area of town called Pelourinho which is the restored historical city and the nightlife capital of the area. Salvador was founded in 1549 as Brazil’s first capital and there are 365 churches in the city—one for every day of the year.
