Ushuaia: Saturday – Feb 10, 2007
This morning it was sunny and a bit warmer but cloudy and rainy as the afternoon progressed. It snowed from time to time in the mountains and that was lovely to see. I went to the town today to do some shopping. It was a bit crowded since some of the cruise ships were in town but that didn’t interfere with my shopping. There is, as always, some junk but also some nice shops and I bought some little penguins (really cute!) and other things. Then Phil and I had lunch at the Bodegon, a little cafe in a house in the middle of town.
At about 5PM, the pilots, Jose and Alberto from Chile, arrived. There are some interesting rules around here: you need to have a local pilot with you when you go in or out of the port of Ushuaia, even if you are a yacht like us and not a cruise ship. Since we are leaving in a day or so to go to Cape Horn, we need Chilean pilots to be with us even though the charts are clearly marked. And, of course, you have to pay money to hire these pilots. Rules, rules, rules!
We had a salmon lasagna for dinner and then Phil and Rick watched a movie about going around the Horn while I read and did needlepoint. A very relaxing day.
