Indigo in Ushuaia: Friday – Feb 2, 2007

It’s a beautiful sunny morning but chilly because of the wind.  We had a champagne breakfast this morning with bacon, eggs, grits, etc. and Carlos was able to return to the boat for breakfast.  Of course, he had to answer phone calls just about the whole time and reported to us that the Admiral had called him at 6:30 that morning.  After breakfast, Carlos and Gonzalo left to prepare their ship because they will probably have to leave, no matter the weather, to go to Antarctica and help with the cruise ship situation.  Apparently there was a crack in the hull as a result of the collision with the rock and there is a fuel leak of unknown size.  They are moving the fuel to another holding tank to stop the leakage and divers will go down to evaluate the damage and do any possible emergency repairs.  I don’t think I would like to go diving in that very cold water, no matter what I was wearing!  The passengers from that ship arrived in Ushuaia today after sleeping in the dining room and wherever else they could find room on an otherwise already full ship.  I learned later there were three couples from Jacksonville on the ship that went aground; I’ll have to see if I can find the newspaper article about their reaction to the situation.

After breakfast, Rick went to do a little shopping in town and Phil and I just sat around reading and napping.  We had a light dinner on the boat and then Phil and Rick went out to the Dublin pub with Carlos, Gonzalo and some other officers.  Sure am glad I didn’t go since they didn’t get home until about 3:30AM!
