Ilulissat

Photos taken in and around Ilulissat, include lots of ice. The aerial shot is a view of the Ilulissat Glacier in the distance and its fjord choked in ice. The glacier has retreated 6.5 miles in the past 10 years.  At one time in the distant past, it reached all the way out to its opening to the sea, a distance of about 35 miles.  The large red and white freighter pushing through ice is an Arctic Lines ship that regularly serves Ilulissat when ice conditions permit. The photo taken of Indigo in which I am standing on the sundeck with both arms raised in celebration and ice bergs on either side was taken as we emerged through a narrow gap between those two bergs, allowing us to make our way into the town harbor. The cruise ship is the Costa Deliziosa which we followed out of the ice pack using it as our ice breaker. Without it, I’m doubtful we could have escaped. The local Coast Guard vessel declined our request to help us break out.
