Fortaleza, Brazil – July 23, 2006

I know you have gone many days without a new entry here but that’s because we have been in areas of Brazil that don’t have internet access so we couldn’t add to the blog. And actually, until I got home, we were never in an area with internet access. But don’t worry—I made lots of notes so it’s now catch-up time.

Today is Sunday and we were supposed to leave Fortaleza today but someone forgot to tell the weatherman so we are going to stay here another day. There is certainly no point in going out into the ocean with big waves unless we really have to. So we relaxed the whole day—and that’s not so bad. Grant and Will went to the beach and it was quite clear from the color of their skin and the board shorts they were wearing that they were Americans. But you know how teenagers are—they like to be distinctive!

A few things about Brazil: The country has about 4000 miles of coastline, making it the country with the longest and perhaps the most beautiful in the world. The problem for us is that there aren’t many places to pull in from the ocean and there certainly aren’t many marinas. So we plan to spend a lot of time anchoring out, perhaps sometimes in the ocean close to land. This is also one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world with people from all sorts of countries. Of course, Portuguese is the national language with very few people speaking even a little bit of English or Spanish. We’ll see how that goes!
