Meeting the boat in Fortaleza, Brazil – July 20, 2006

It’s Thursday, July 20 and we arrived to the boat early morning. The boat looks beautiful and the weather is glorious: about 82 degrees with a wonderful breeze. We all took naps (since we had a sleepless night on the plane) and then Phil took Grant, Will and me to a Brazilian restaurant called Sal e Brassa. I have no idea what that means—Portuguese is a bit difficult. But whatever it means, the food was very good. There is a Brazilian restaurant in Atlanta that works like the one here. You sit down and order this wonderful drink that has tons of limes in it. Then you can go to the salad bar (Phil, Will and Grant didn’t want to waste their stomachs there) or just stay in your seat. Then the waiters start bringing out all kinds of beef, chicken and pork on big skewers that look like swords. Luckily, there was a draing of a cow on the table with his parts marked and numbered with a list of what each part was. So when the waiter came to the table, you asked him to point to the cut on the drawing and then you decided whether you wanted to try that cut or not. The boys stuck with the good parts and didn’t want to try cow hearts or anything like that. They kept coming back to the table with various cuts until you didn’t want any more. Then they brought the dessert cart—too much for me. It was really good!

Then we went to a bar/restaurant where two guys were playing blues music on their guitars. We all enjoyed that too. The three boys smoked cigars—it was outside—and then we headed back to the boat. We have all learned the importance of a good taxi driver who can show you where to go and where not to. Almost no one speaks English or even Spanish but we got along just fine. It was a great first day back.
